How can you make a camera's flash dimmer?

I have a camera that has a flash that flushed the picture. And, when the flash isn't off, then the camera is flushed by the darkness. Is there a way to solve this problem without having to purchase a new digital camera?

How can you make a camera's flash dimmer?
You can diffuse it with a piece of tissue or white panty hose taped over the flash. I've even seen a Snoot diffuser made for digital cameras, but only the SLR's. Good luck.
Reply:There are a few ways to deal with this problem. Does your flash head tilt? If so, you can bounce it off a ceiling or wall, and have diffused flash as a bonus.

If it doesn't bounce, there are still a few things you can try. Find your flash's "sweet spot", or zone where the flash gives you a perfect exposure. It depends on the power of the flash, but going a few feet out can make a huge difference!

If your lens zooms, you can try that to reduce the light a little. Telephotos allow less light in than a standard or wide-angle lens.

You can adjust your camera to allow less light in, by stopping down your lens a stop or two, orsetting your exposure compensation on the minus side. Don't change your shutter speed, though, because it is set to sync with your flash at a certain speed.

You can filter the light with a white hankie or tissue, held over your flash.
Reply:Cover it with your finger. :P
